Section 1: This week in Standard Pauper

Worlds, Worlds, Worlds!

As with the end of every season, there was a battle for the top spot in the season rankings.

The thing about these decks is, most will be gone after rotation.

A true list of champions!

We have seen these decks for a while, and thankfully we get a whole new set to brew with!

I did a series last year about rotation. I would like to produce a truncated view here.

Section 3: Brace yourselves, there’s going to be mass casualties

The top cards of this past season

72 Individual cards were represented in both Worlds tournaments combined.

Creatures (162)
17 Hopeful Eidolon
17 Keening Apparition
17 Heliod’s Pilgrim
14 Auramancer
Nyxborn Shieldmate
Akroan Skyguard
Sunspire Gatekeepers
Sungrace Pegasus
Syndic of Tithes
Cloudfin Raptor
Gladecover Scout
Basilica Screecher
Leafcrown Dryad
Centaur Healer
Wingsteed Rider
Disciple of Phenax
Saruli Gatekeepers
Ubul Sar Gatekeepers
Gray Merchant of Asphodel
Lagonna-Band Trailblazer
Deputy of Acquittals
Archaeomancer
Akroan Crusader
Satyr Hoplite
Selfless Cathar
Ogre Jailbreaker
Suntail Hawk
Kingpin’s Pet
Scholar of Athreos
Seller of Songbirds
Sunspire Griffin

I want everyone to think back. Remember when Gary first came out, and everyone thought he would dominate the format till rotation? Combining every top Worlds deck, there were only 4.

Far and away the biggest player was the little Eidolon that could.

Now, lets take a look at this creature field after rotation

Creatures (82)
17 Hopeful Eidolon
17 Heliod’s Pilgrim
Nyxborn Shieldmate
Akroan Skyguard
Sungrace Pegasus
Wingsteed Rider
Leafcrown Dryad
Gray Merchant of Asphodel
Disciple of Phenax
Lagonna-Band Trailblazer
Selfless Cathar
Satyr Hoplite
Akroan Crusader
Scholar of Athreos

For count, that is a reduction in the number of unique cards by 65%. Almost 2/3 reduction.

The total number is a bit different story.

Prerotation, there were 162 total creatures used, after, 82 remain. This is interesting because of the top four cards, 2 remain. So, we lose 50% of the top four cards, and 50% of total number of creatures. This tells me the top cards were used quite extensively.

The two cards that are leaving were both utility creatures, with a one time effect. Auramancer was a white grave digger. While Keening Apparition was a functional Mortify. They will be missed. However, we do have a more expensive Auramancer replacement in Griffin Dreamfinder. Keening was, however, more unique.

Now, lets take a look at realm of Spells

Before

Instants (87)
14 Gods Willing
11 Celestial Flare
Devour Flesh
Lightning Strike
Ranger’s Guile
Shock
Essence Scatter
Crypt Incursion
Psychic Strike
Grisly Spectacle
Peel from Reality
Raise the Alarm
Fortify
Pillar of Light
Countermand
Eyes in the Skies
Pharika’s Cure
Titan’s Strength
Weapon Surge

After

Instants (41)
14 Gods Willing
Lightning Strike
Ranger’s Guile
Raise the Alarm
Pillar of Light
Peel from Reality
Countermand
Pharika’s Cure
Titan’s Strength

Only 9 Instants remain. About 50%, and about 50% of the total used remain as well.

I think the 2 that will be missed the most are Celestial Flare and Devour Flesh. Neither of which I am sad to see leave. Don’t get me wrong. I love to make my opponent make a Sophie’s choice. What I hate, is having to make that choice. As we noted in our set review, there are no edicts at common in Khans. Get used to it folks, it is a brave new world.

Sorceries (33)
Sign in Blood
Divination
Pilfered Plans
Flurry of Horns
Thassa’s Bounty
Triplicate Spirits
Kruphix’s Insight
Read the Bones
Uncovered Clues
Mind Sculpt

I hate you pilfered plans, like a lot.

Sorceries (24)
Sign in Blood
Thassa’s Bounty
Flurry of Horns
Divination
Read the Bones
Kruphix’s Insight
Mind Sculpt

This one shows a lot less differentiations. The starting point was smaller to begin with, and the meta needs instants a lot more than sorcery speed. I expect to see a lot more triplicate spirits. Probably with some Treasure Cruise mixed in.

And finally we get to the enchanting world of enchantments

Before

(63)
18 Ethereal Armor
10 Pacifism
Stab Wound
Font of Return
Death’s Approach
Madcap Skills
Quag Sickness
Hammerhand
Eternal Thirst
Oppressive Rays
Zephyr Charge

Can you see it already? The feeling of doom is over whelming. I don’t even want to make the next list…

(13)
Font of Return
Hammerhand
Eternal Thirst
Oppressive Rays

This is devastating. No more 3/3 first strike life link on turn 2. Let’s be honest, was that at all fair? No, it was not. Was it fun? Hell yes it was. The auras strategy will have to change dramatically or just go away. I have a strong suspicion that auras will go into a support role.

Since we got functional reprints of the gates (I like the refuges better), I did not do much with the lands this time.

What do you all think?

Section 4: A look at Classic Pauper

Mine? I pick the bonesplitter, keeps me open and it is an awesome card.
