Community League #5: Classic Pauper, Winner!

community league 5 banner

Playing a Pauper league felt like coming home. It’s definitely in our wheelhouse and certainly a favorite format in our community. Hopefully that means you guys all had a blast in the Classic Pauper league, and some good Magic was played. I personally enjoy the undiscovered brewing formats for league play, but will never complain about “having” to play Pauper. Tie-breakers at 3-1 kept Brennon and I out of the Top 8, but competition was tough at the top end and we probably would have been stomped anyway.

After four rounds of Swiss play and a grueling top 8 shoot-out, though, I am happy to declare our winner.

League #5: Classic Pauper – Winner!

Congrats to Landonpeanut for his win! Landon went 3-1 in Swiss and made into the Top 8 as the 7th seed. He then swept the Top 8 by defeating JorgeJacoh, Dredsilver, and Reversed. Well done!

I’ve decided at this point that Landon never reads his email, so perhaps he will tell us in the comments what list he played and what some of his memorable matches were like.

For winning the event, Landon will receive 5 tickets and a $10 credit to MTGOTraders. Thanks again to JSiri84 for contributing the credit.

For coming in second, Reversed will receive 5 tickets.

Carnuz receives 10 tickets for being the highest-ranking patron in the event.

We like to reward our patrons whenever possible. If you really want to support this community, please consider signing up.

Congratulations to all our winners!

As far as I know, Pierakor and Dredsilver never actually played it out, so they actually share the third-place spot.

I played a different list every week and the videos are out there for the world to see. After getting stomped by Maigray in week one, I had a nice run to finish 3-1.

What did you play and how did it go? Share in the comments below or the league forum.

Our top-ranking patron, Carnuz, played Stompy for the whole event and shared his list and an overview of his matches.

Carnuz says: In round 1 I won vs Reversed’s Delver deck. In g1 I was on the play, kept a mediocre hand with 3 forest but I was lucky to draw just one more land and managed to win attacking with a couple of nettle sentinel and a garruk companion. In g2 I had to mull to 5. He starts the beatdown with a ninja and a golem but I could play a river boa and rancor. It seems the game has become a race, until he snaps my boa and wins 2 turns later. g3 I kept a nice hand: forest, 2 quirion ranger, nettle sentinel, garruk’s companion, skarrgan pit-skulk and young wolf. I drew the second land in turn 4, but my rangers worked full time until then, because he casted curse of chains on my skarrgan. Finally he conceded in turn 5.

I didn’t play round 2 because we couldn’t meet with my opp.

I faced Gonz’s MBC in round 3. All 3 games were really fast. In g1 my little minions managed to win, fighting vs his tons of removal but I kept a nice hand and drew well. G2 I kept a good hand and had a nice start, but then crypt rats kill all my creatures when I’m tapped out, with many pump spells in my hand. I conceded after a gary and an angler. g3 I managed to win with a big Silhana, helped by an undying guy because of edict effects.

Round 4 I was crushed by Jorge Jacoh’s Delver deck. No options, he stomped me though my list is built against delver, with the main river boas and scattershot archers, but you know, delver is delver.

And the format for League #6 will be …

You guys put in your nominations last week, and now, as the winner, Landonpeanut gets to choose the format from among the top nominees. Those choices are:

Extended Pauper (Commons only, Innistrad – Magic Origins)

Modern Silverblack (Commons and uncommons from Modern-legal sets)

Legacy Silverblack (Commons and uncommons from Legacy-legal sets)

I think the concerns about moderating an Heirloom event are valid and right now it’s more than I want to take on. I have concerns about Legacy Silverblack because, technically, that includes [c]Wasteland[/c], but other than that it seems worth a shot. Are there other obscenely expensive Legacy cards at Common or Uncommon I should know about?

Landon, let us know in the comments which format from the list above you’d like to pick.

Thanks everyone for playing and I hope you enjoyed the league. Become a patron to help support future events!
