community league 6 banner web

Congratulations to Karakusk for fighting through an epic top 8 to claim victory! Karakusk received 35 bot credits from Cardhoarder for taking first place.

I’d also like to congratulate Denofbears, who not only took second place in the event, but was also our highest ranking patron. Because of both his record and his Patreon support, Denofbears won 15 bot credits from Cardhoarder and 10 MTGO tickets directly from me.

Congratulations, winners!

Format for Community League #7

Now that we’re in to the Top 8, it’s time to vote on the format for our next league. I will pick the top three formats and submit them to this event’s winner, who will be able to select the format for the next league event. Vote below.

Top 8 Pairings

Top 8 is a single-elimination bracket seeded based on your positions after 5 weeks of Swiss. There is a play-off spot for third place, which won’t make a difference, prize-wise, unless it’s for the patron reward.

We step up the pace for top 8 to try and close things out. Our goal is to have all matches completed by the beginning of next week, i.e. before September 7.

Report in comments per usual. I will update the Challonge and the site as we go so you can see your match-ups.

Community League #6: Extended Pauper, Week 1

community league 6 banner web

Get your Extended Pauper lists together, because it’s time to get this league rolling!

First, a shout-out to our Patrons. Without our supporters on Patreon we would not be able to do these leagues, which now occur every 2 months. For as little as $2 per month you let us do awesome things. If you’re not a patron already, please consider signing up today. I also want to remind you that if you become a patron before the end of July you will be eligible for the patron prize at the end, and if we hit $250 total before the end of the month and maintain that level throughout this event, I would DOUBLE all prize payouts.

Really, y’all, every little bit helps!

Here is a quick reminder of how this thing works.

League Rules

1. Extended Pauper lists may include commons from Standard-rotation MTGO sets from Innistrad through Origins. Use the “Pauper” filter on MTGO, but make sure you are not using cards that were commons in previous sets but are uncommon in a recent set (e.g. [c]Rancor[/c]). If you have questions about which sets are legal, or specific cards, ask in the comments. It’s better to be sure now than to get DQed for using illegal cards. Origins cards will be legal in MTGO starting on Monday, July 27. If you see an opponent using illegal cards, take a screenshot and send it to me. You may play a new list every week or keep the same list, so long as each list is Extended Pauper legal.

2. You get 3 points for a match win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. A BYE counts as a win.

3. It is the responsibility of the winner to report their win. They should do so in the comment section of that week’s post. Your comment should look something like this: “Hi, fanofhistory beat bava this week, 2-1.” Report by the end of Thursday each week.

4. Communicate early and often. I will only send out the one email with all your contact information. Don’t lose it! Get in touch by email (it is much more effective than waiting around on MTGO). If no one communicates with each other or with me, that week’s pairing will be considered a draw. After two consecutive draw weeks due to lack of communication, you will be removed from the League. If one person is attempting to communicate and the other person is not, they should let me know. I will attempt to solve issues when I can, but when that doesn’t work out, the person who is trying to communicate will always get the win. Don’t wait until the last minute.

5. After the initial email all official league announcements will happen here on the site. I will update every Friday. You can always stay up to date with the link on the home page or by keeping tabs on the Events page. You can also get updates by liking us on Facebook or following me on Twitter @bava_mtg.

6. We’ll play 5 weeks of Swiss and then cut to Top 8. The league will end by September 6th.

7. You can drop at any time. Please let me know if you’d like to drop before the next week’s pairings go up. You will always be welcomed back into subsequent league events.

8. Chat about the league or share lists over in our forums.

9. Contact me if you have any questions.

Announcing Community League #6: Extended Pauper

community league 6 banner web

Thanks to the continued support of our wonderful patrons, we had a great Classic Pauper league with four weeks of Swiss play and a dynamic top 8. Landonpeanut took the win, in the end, running WW Tokens through most of the event and facing off against a lot of Delver. Congratulations to Landon and thanks to everyone who made the event another fun and community-building success.

Want more leagues, tournaments, gauntlets, videos, articles, and other good stuff?

Become a patron today!

Just $2 per month does a lot to support our efforts and you get some great perks, too, including access to our patron-only forums, a direct line on video requests, and the opportunity to win patron prizes.

Now let’s talk about our next league!

Community League #6: Format and Rules

As the winner of league #5, Landon got to choose the format from among those with the most votes. The options I presented to him included Legacy Silverblack, Modern Silverblack, and Extended Pauper. I took heirloom out of the running this time around strictly for the sake of my own time and sanity, but it may be an option in the future.

Landon chose, and the format for league #6 is Extended Pauper!

Extended what, now?

The Extended Pauper format will allow cards that were printed at the Common rarity level in any set from Innistrad through Magic Origins.

Note that cards printed as commons in past sets and re-printed at a higher rarity level in an Innistrad-Origins set will NOT be legal. For example, [c]Rancor[/c] was printed as a common in multiple pre-Innistrad sets. However, its only printing post-Innistrad was as an uncommon, so it is NOT legal for Extended Pauper play.

This is also how Standard Pauper works, so people familiar with that format should get the idea. Same thing.

There is no banned or restricted list for this format. If people think we should ban [c]Treasure Cruise[/c] please weigh in down in the comments.

Edit: [c]Treasure Cruise[/c] IS banned for this event. Thanks to Roberto for pointing out the filter issue.

Registration is open now and closes in two weeks on Friday, July 24.

To sign up, provide your MTGO username, your real name (or preferred pseudonym), and your time zone down in the comments below.

I will post the first pairings on July 24 and will also send out an email with contact information. I try very hard NOT to send people lots of emails. It is up to you to keep track on the site and get in touch with your opponents promptly. After that, you will have to check the site for your next pairings, which will go up on Friday each week. It will be up to each participant to contact their opponent by email to set up their match for the week. Don’t wait for your opponents contact you; be proactive!

For this event I am going to be very strict concerning players that don’t communicate well. If your opponent says they are having a hard time getting in touch with you, and you don’t respond to my follow-up email in a timely fashion, your opponent will get the win for that week and you may be removed from the event. Check your email, respond to your email, email your opponents, email me. Short notes are fine, but KEEP IN TOUCH!

We will play 4 weeks of Swiss and then cut to top 8 with the goal to finish the league by the end of August.

League Rules

1. The Extended Pauper format will allow cards that were printed at the Common rarity level in any set from Innistrad through Magic Origins.

2. You get 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. A BYE counts as a win.

3. It is the responsibility of the winner to report their win. They should do so in the comment section of that week’s post. Your comment should look something like this: “Hi, fanofhistory beat bava this week, 2-1.” Report by the end of Thursday each week.

If one person is attempting to communicate and the other person is not, they should let me know.
