3? What other factors go in to making 3 the right number of cruises? Seems like, forgive the pun, such an odd number of 8 drops to have in a deck.

We went over these decks already in the show, so I hope you tuned in!

Here are our decklists:

Mardu Tokens
by Sam, The Vaultboy Hunter

[d]
Creatures
4 Sandsteppe Outcast

Spells
4 Raise the Alarm
4 Dragon Fodder
4 Triplicate Spirits
2 Foul-Tongue Shriek

Now, lets look at an opening hand:

Boy oh boy! [c]Impact Tremors[/c] and all those tokens? I love it!

Now let’s look at the next six cards:

Well, you are not casting that [c]Read the Bones[/c] any time soon. But wow, those tokens will keep you in it for a long time.

Gary’s Cruise Version 2
By Dan, The Fan of History

[d]
Creatures
4 Pharika’s Chosen

Sideboard
2 Disdainful Stroke
4 Negate
2 Feast
1 Naiad
3 Festergloom
1 Disicple of Phenax
2 Unmake the Graves
[/d]

Now, lets look at an opening hand:

Well, I really hope that anticipate does the trick, because this hand is very light on threats. But heavy on draw.

Now let’s look at the next six cards:

Black Cat off the top is real nice and probably really lucky.

Izzet Unblockable?
By Brennon, The Lovable Host

[d]
Creatures
4 Akroan Crusader
4 Elusive Spellfist
2 Jeskai Sage
4 Mardu Scout
2 Goblin Heelcutter

Lands
10 Mountain
4 Evolving Wilds
4 Swiftwater Cliffs
2 Island

Spells
4 Dragon Mantle
3 Lightning Strike

2 Treasure Cruise
4 collateral damage

Sideboard
4 Scouring Sands
3 Negate
3 Magma Spray
2 Disdainful Stroke
2 Treasure Cruise
1 Force Away
[/d]

I added the Sage based on Sam’s moving speech. It seems real good.

Now, lets look at an opening hand:

Unblockable and surf monkeys, that’s all I need to see to keep this hand!

Now let’s look at the next six cards:

Yikes! Will my tiny bit of card draw get me out of this flood? I think having firebreathing will mitigate some of the bad flooding.

So, what revisions are you going to make?

2 Feast of Dreams
1 Voyage’s End
1 Disciple of Phenax
1 Rakshasa’s Secret [/d]

Now, lets look at an opening hand:

Turn 4 angler is pretty good, but is that fast enough? You have a bit of protection with voyage’s end. I am concerned this has too many high cost cards. You are years away from casting that treasure cruise.

Now let’s look at the next six cards:

So, what Dragons cards make this deck stronger?

What new cards make this deck weaker?

I would replace [c]Void Snare[/c] with [c]Sidisi’s Faithful[/c]. It can be a blocker if needed and it cannot be negated!

What do you think?

3 color rage deck. Lets take a closer look.

Now, lets look at an opening hand:

I would keep the hand. But that puts a lot of faith on the Skyguard.

Now, for the curve!

Interesting, not really a curve but not the tower of power we have seen recently either. More of a ski slope, with moguls.

Now let’s look at the next six cards:

I like the next six probably more than the original seven. The hoplite is going to get you moving. He seems to be less of an autokill than the skyguard. However, throwing a dragon mantle on him and a battle rage and you can hit for 6 pretty quick.

So, what do you think of this shell Sam has created? Worth some more thought? or should we just try to power out more anglers and use battle rage on that crazy fish?

This deck is a bliznado of white fury. I like how he references My Galaxy in the title but makes 1st place. Yet MyGalaxy hilariously names a very similar deck “Loses to itself” and finishes a distant Top 8. (Yes I am guessing the name was done after the fact, but come on. Pretend the joke was a confluence of cosmic hilarity and not pre-planned schtick. )

We have seen this archetype several times over the course of the season. So, I will not be showcasing this deck. Instead, I give you the runner up!.

JPHSnake would be proud! RDW is a classic. It will always be around. However, the last 2 times this deck was entered, it didn’t even make Top 8. It always amazes me out varied this meta is yet it has the smallest pool of cards.

Now, lets look at an opening hand:

Not bad. I think you have to expect a lot of hands like this.

The slope of power!:

Now let’s look at the next six cards:

My ultimate fear when playing a crazy aggro style deck, the flood. Like the old testament, when I flood is significant, it can destroy your whole world. That may be too dramatic, but with no way of dealing with extra cards, you are stuck with what you have.

Section 3: Fate Reforged

Lets look at a potential brew regarding the newest release:

This deck is stuck between being aggro and control. Is that what they call midrange? I have never understood that term. I just hear people call a deck midrange and I go with it.

Now, lets look at an opening hand:

Here is the curve (not a curve):

Now let’s look at the next six cards:

Wow, if this is typical of the sort of draws you get, then sign me up!

Section 3: Fate Reforged

This weekend marks the beginning of Fate Reforged cards on Magic Online. You will need to pick them up but I recommend waiting as long as possible. Commons do not drop seriously until drafting starts. If you buy them this weekend, expect to pay at least .25 tix per card.

Now that you have tempered your fervent card buying, it is time to talk about what to pick up. Please voice your opinions in the comments below.

I’ll start. I think [c]Write Into Being[/c] will be a fantastic pick up. If there is no divination in the M16, I feel this is an excellent replacement.

Write into being lets you do something divination never has. It puts a body on the board. You get to smooth your next draw by choosing whether to put the non-manifested card on either the top or bottom. Divination on turn three leaves you open, while write into being helps steady up the board. Also, the nice thing about manifest is that you can play a creature who is manifest but simply paying its mana cost. Also, if it is a morph, you can pay the morph cost if it is cheaper.

Now, you go!

The Standard Pauper Show, Ep 33

The Standard Pauper Show, Issue 29

Section 1: This week in Standard Pauper

Man, these review shows can go long. Not Limited Resources long, but long enough!

Very few cards floated our boat. A few standouts were:

Here were a couple of cards that on the surface, are bad. However, I think they can work if you put some effort into it:

Yes, the casting cost on these is ridiculous, but this is Standard Pauper, we take what we can get!

Section 2: New Brews for you to use

As you saw on the show, you did watch The Standard Pauper Show didn’t you? I made a Mono Red “Stompy” deck:

[d]
Creatures
4 Akroan Crusader
4 Goblin Heelcutter
4 Satyr Hoplite
4 Mardu Scout

Spells
3 Collateral Damage
2 Lightning Strike
4 Titan’s Strength
3 Act of Treason
3 Bathe in Dragonfire
2 Tormenting Voice
4 Dragon Mantle
4 Hammerhand

Lands
19 Mountain

Sideboard
1 Bathe in Dragonfire
4 Deathbellow Raider
3 Flurry of Horns
2 Lightning Strike
3 Magma Spray
2 Tormenting Voice
[/d]

Should there be more creatures? Maybe 21 lands.

I think this could be the start of something good. It is fast and if you added the [c]Valley Dasher[/c] you may over whelm the already blazing Boros deck.

This deck has a subtheme of taking their creatures and striking back. With the [c]Collateral Damage[/c] spell you can either sac their own guy for more humiliation or you can dash in for 3 then sac for 3 more. Not saying it is ideal but I think the extra punch is a good thing.

This deck could potentially benefit from the [c]Temur Battle Rage[/c]. You could use a dasher and hit them for 6 or pump up the Hoplite and go for broke.

For purely selfish reasons I thought I would show this winner:

4 Minotaur Skullcleaver
4 Satyr Hoplite
4 Valley Dasher

[/d]

I see this deck as the predecessor to my aforementioned deck. Interesting take on RDW.

Now, lets look at an opening hand:

Here is no, what I would call adequate, target for hammer hands. However, could still use it and lightning strike to remove a blocker.

The curve is more of a slope:

My fear with keeping 3 lands is the flood.

Now let’s look at the next six cards:

The flood is real!

I am not too confident this opening 13 can get us there. That is why I included tormenting voices in my deck. We need the draw!

I like it though. Simple, clean, beat foes around the neck and shoulders.

Section 3: Fate Reforged PreRelease

So, as Sam mentioned, I went 4-0-0 over all at my LGS prerelease. I was pretty happy.

Game 1 vs The L2 Judge at the event: 2-0-0 I was worried, he has quite the reputation at that store for being a strong player.

Game 2 vs Jeskai: 2-1-0 It was close in all three games. However, I had just enough in the last game. It was 5 to 8 and my little dashers who could beat in for just enough.

Game 3 vs Son of the Judge: 2-1-0 When we sat down he said “I will avenge my father!” I liked that kid. Game three almost went to time, but again the dashers did their thing and kept going.

Game 4 vs I think it was Mardu splashing blue: 2-0-0 He was a cool guy. We ended up talking about cards after the game longer than the game went on.

For those interested, here is my deck list:

[d]
Creatures
1 Ainok Tracker
2 Goblin Heelcutter
1 Gore Swine
1 Jeskai Elder
1 Mardu Heart-Piercer
1 Mardu Scout
1 Orc Sureshot
1 Qarsi High Priest

1 Scaldkin
2 Sultai Emissary

Spells
1 Arc Lightning
1 Bathe in Dragonfire
1 Cloudform
1 Enhanced Awareness
1 Reality Shift
1 Refocus
1 Supplant Form
1 Wild Slash
1 Write into Being

Land
1 Bloodfell Caves
1 Dismal Backwater
1 Frontier Bivouac
6 Island
4 Mountain
3 Swamp
1 Swiftwater Cliffs
[/d]

[c]Write into Being[/c] is soooo good. I will likely build a deck that has 4 of them. [c]Cloudform[/c] is also really strong. I really wish it was common.

Did you know, there are no other Flying, Hexproof, for 3 mana? This is the only one. Also, it is a 2/2. Heck, there are only 4 creature with natural flying and hexproof in the game! This seems like a build around card. [c] Aven Fleetwing[/c] is the closest but Cloudform is just straight up better.

So, what cards are you most looking forward to once rotation occurs?

Now this deck will benefit from a few of the cards in Fate Reforged. I want no other, no other lover. This is our life, our time. When we are together, I need you forever. Is it love? It just might be. Lets look at an actual curve this week:

Weird, those high cost tokens really sway the form.

I wish that either the divination or Treasure Cruise was a land. Any land really. However, I think keeping this is not bad. You are one land away from a great opening hand.

Now let’s look at the next six cards:

Ask and ye shall receive indeed. We get a little flooded but I feel pretty good. So yes, this is love.

Section 3: How would I update it?

Guess what? It was a trick question. Was that even a question? How could it be a trick question if I didn’t ask you anything? Oh well, there you have it. Strong decks are strong.

Keep it.
No more discussion.

Now let’s look at the next six cards:

Maybe a little flooding, but I would guess you have so much gas to begin with, a bit land won’t hurt your chances.

Section 4: Future Sight

Now I have a question for Bava and Gwyned.

“What cards, spoiled so far, make this deck better?”

The pickins be mighty slim.

Is this card any good to you? I would say your current 2 drops are way better. Does this make excess land more useful? Yes, but the card economy seems bad.

You don’t run trumpet blast, so this card is just way too much mana.

But what about our runner up.

Is this a viable home for [c]War Flare[/c]? It does fit with the theme. Does the extra mana cost make Trumpet Blast a better choice?

Fate Reforged Spoiler: Soulflayer

Happy New Year!

It has been a privilege to be a part of this great site. There are a lot of great resources for Magic players out there, but I’m particularly proud to be a part of this one. After selling out of paper Magic, I became interested in Pauper online, and Dan contributed, by far, the best content for learning Pauper play at the time. It’s an honor to be working alongside this team, and I resolve to do contribute the best content I can here.

All that mushy stuff aside, let’s get down to it. It’s an exciting time for Magic: Spoiler season! Including basic lands, 57 cards have been spoiled at the time of this writing, and while Peyton has covered my favorite of the bunch, [c]Soulflayer[/c] comes in a close second. I am excited to try it out in Modern!

Now, I can guess what you might be thinking. Many strategies have been dismissed since the release of Khans because of the graveyard-hate designed to neutralize [c]Treasure Cruise[/c]. The truth is, though, that there seem only to be more decks built around graveyard strategies, including [c]Dig Through Time[/c] in [c]Scapeshift[/c]-centered decks and U/R Delver with [c]Treasure Cruise[/c]. Additionally, the B/G decks utilize the graveyard as a resource in their game-plan. [c]Jeskai Ascendancy[/c] decks mock the suggestion that the graveyard is an unreliable tool. In fact, it seems that all of the best brewers, grinders, and pros have taken a gentleman’s agreement to live and let live.

With this assumption that we can trust our opponents not to mess with our delving abilities, I maintain optimism about [c]Soulflayer[/c].

Another argument against [c]Soulflayer[/c] is the design space it occupies; we have seen something like it before in [c]Cairn Wanderer[/c]. Although the latter has existed since October 2007, we have never seen it post even one result, so why should something just like it be any better? Well, let’s take an honest look at the two:

[c]Cairn Wanderer[/c]
-Costs 5, always
-Can have fear, landwalk, protection, and shroud keywords, whereas [c]Soulflayer[/c] cannot
-For what it’s worth, has changeling, so tribal bonuses boost it
-Is only a 4/4 if your graveyard is hated after resolution
-Is better against [c]Remand[/c], but not particularly good (2 mana versus 6 mana investments)

[c]Soulflayer[/c]
-Costs between 2-6
-Can have hexproof and indestructible
-Maintains its abilities despite graveyard hate after resolution
-Is really hurt by [c]Remand[/c]

Also, to save you all some time, both creatures can have flying, first strike, double strike, deathtouch, haste, lifelink, reach, trample, and vigilance. Neither creature can have the keywords Annihilator, Infect, nor Prowess, which are interesting for future possibilities of this sort of mechanic.

Comparing the two, I genuinely believe that hexproof, keeping the keywords, and the lower cost put [c]Soulflayer[/c] over the top enough to make it the foundation of a viable strategy. Let no one forget that a 2-cmc 4/4 beater is nothing to scoff at. It passes the most basic of tests for creatures in Modern: the [c]Lightning Bolt[/c] test. Any creature that costs more than one to resolve needs to be immune to [c]Lightning Bolt[/c], particularly in these Delver-ridden times.

In today’s metagame, I am most excited about [c]Soulflayer[/c] having some form of evasion, whether it is trample or flying, some form of protection in indestructible or hexproof (preferably the latter), and lifelink to shore up the Burn matchup. Doublestrike is, of course, a fine addition.

Once we have landed on an answer to the viable or unviable question, we have to decide what sort of shell to put this guy into. My favorite is one that can either reanimate fatties or use them to delve. One unfortunate element of this brew is that both its angles of attack are vulnerable to cards like [c]Rest in Peace[/c], but remember that everyone is under the aforementioned gentleman’s agreement.

Here is my brew for you all to enjoy this fine new year.

[d title=”Soulflayer Reanimator (Modern)”]
Land
2 Blackcleave Cliffs
1 Blood Crypt
2 Bloodstained Mire
2 Darkslick Shores
3 Gemstone Mine
1 Godless Shrine
1 Hallowed Fountain
1 Island
4 Polluted Delta
1 Steam Vents
1 Swamp
1 Watery Grave

Creatures
1 Drogskol Reaver
1 Erebos, God of the Dead
4 Griselbrand
1 Keranos, God of Storms
1 Sagu Mauler
4 Soulflayer
1 Sphinx of the Steel Wind
1 Wurmcoil Engine

Other Spells
4 Faithless Looting
4 Glimpse the Unthinkable
4 Goryo’s Vengeance
2 Inquisition of Kozilek
4 Thought Scour
3 Thoughtseize
2 Treasure Cruise
4 Unburial Rites[/d]

A number of plans exist here: we either reanimate our fatties using [c]Goryo’s Vengeance[/c] and [c]Unburial Rites[/c] or use their sweet keywords to “imprint” [c]Soulflayer[/c] and ride him to victory.

While looking through for the relevant keywords (hexproof, flying, lifelink, etc.) one comes across a number of reasonably costed value creatures that you could cast in an aggressive deck that has a late-game plan in [c]Soulflayer[/c]. These include [c]Vampire Nighthawk[/c], which certainly belongs in the sideboard of the deck above. Additional elements would be targeted graveyard disruption or [c]Leyline of the Void[/c], extra discard spells such as [c]Duress[/c] to remove [c]Remand[/c] and others from your opponents’ hands, and cards that work against aggressive strategies like [c]Drown in Sorrow[/c].

To Wrap Up

Well boys, more spoilers have been unleashed even as I’ve typed this article. This set is full of powerhouse cards, and I look forward to exploring it with you. Even while new and better [c]Young Pyromancer[/c] cards are being shown, I still believe that [c]Soulflayer[/c] is a contender. What do you think?
