T4:  Win:  2 – 0 vs.  beatnik bobby  Izzet Control
T2:  Win:  2 – 1 vs.  AmericanGaren  Azor’s Heroes

Interesting to note is the fact that this deck lost to the other mono-green deck.

YellowEyes then went on to lose to Beatnik Bobby’s Izzet Control in R3 and AmericanGaren’s Azor’s Heroes in T4. However, you can see that Jonder_quin subsequently beat Beatnik and AmericanGaren in the following rounds.

Lets look at the two and see what could have been the difference:

compare

I highlighted the differences.

As you can see, Garen’s had fewer lands, but Jonder’s had 4 Evolving Wilds (which I don’t agree with but that is my opinion). Could Garen have been mana screwed more times than Jonder and thus leading to the deck’s defeat?

My other biggest concern with Garen’s deck is the Oathsworn. [c]Setessan Oathsworn[/c] is only good if you can make it heroic, and you will have to do it TWICE to make it better than a Nessian Courser. Why would I waste my my time when I can have a 3/3 hit the ground and be ready to fight immediately?

What do you think?

Section 3: The Community League

Well, week 3 has come and gone and I am now 2 – 1 – 0

The first week I won against Affinity, the second week, I lost to Dimir Control, and this week I won versus Rhystic Tron.

The first 2 weeks I went with Turbo Exhume. The deck is crazy and explosive and fun to play. However, in a solidly Swamp heavy meta, I decided to go a different route:

Mono White by Deluxeicoff
[d]
Creatures
4 Doomed Traveler
4 Order of Leitbur
4 Soul Warden
4 Squadron Hawk
4 Suture Priest
Instant
4 Guardians’ Pledge
4 Raise the Alarm
Sorcery
4 Battle Screech

4 Journey to Nowhere
Land
19 Plains
4 Quicksand

Sideboard

3 Cloudshift
4 Lumithread Field
3 Prismatic Strands
2 Rune of Protection: Red
3 Standard Bearer [/d]

The deck is a lot of fun and I used the Order of Leitbur’s pump ability way more often than I thought I would.

So, a tip of the hat to Deluxeicoff for this solid build.

How have the rest of you done?

Normally at this point I talk about one of the winners.
However, I want to discuss BambooRush’s deck. He went 3-0 but then was not in the top 4. Jason Moore was the pilot and he wrote about the deck in his latest article on http://www.blackborder.com/q/node/18999

I have enjoyed Jason’s articles for years. His were among the first I ever read on the subject of pauper. I think he is a good player and is a positive influence in the community. If you haven’t, I recommend giving him a read.

You should be able to see the synergy. Fill the graveyard, then use it up.

Now, lets look at an opening hand:

I don’t think you can throw back a hand like this. You have threats and enablers.

Now I want to show you the “curve”:

That is not a curve. The thing we have come to know and love about devle decks is that they are heavily skewed as far as the CMC is concerned. So, do not look at this like a normal deck.

Let’s look at the next six cards:

Well, as he mentioned in his article, this is going to be a long grindy fight. In the end, you should have bigger and better creatures than your opponent. Which usually means you will be winning. Thanks, Jason, for giving the MPDC a shot!

Unfortunately, this is an approximation. Until the database is updated, I would strongly recommend (ie. begging) you post the list in the comments section of the deck page. Otherwise, I won’t be able to fully extol the virtues of your decks.

The interesting thing is that this deck took down both SPDC and MPDC this week. That is no small feat. The fact that it is mono colored makes me instantly love it!

Now, lets look at an opening hand:

Now I want to show you a thing of beauty:

Mmmm dat curve! It is so beautiful. My heart can barely stand it.

Now let’s look at the next six cards:

So, what can we say about this deck? First of all, you have blockers. The scorpion, gladewatcher and the grizzly are going to hold everything back. Also, once the grizzly hits in the ground you can attack with both watchers. The biggest issue is going to be your finisher. Those elk are far away, and if you aren’t careful, you may never see them.

Section 3: The League

Well, as you know by now, I did not win. I came in second. That’s right, I am a big number 2.

Here is my deck list:

[d title=”MonoRed Heroic by Cyrulean (Standard Silverblack)”]
Creatures
4 Akroan Crusader
2 Mardu Scout
4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Satyr Hoplite
4 Foundry Street Denizen

Spells
2 Hordeling Outburst
3 Collateral Damage
4 Titan’s Strength

4 Hammerhand
3 Lightning Strike

Sideboard
1 Blinding Flare
2 Frenzied Goblin
1 Magma Jet
3 Scouring Sands
3 Arc Lightning
2 Humble Defector
1 Lightning Strike
2 Roast
[/d]

I wanted nothing over cmc 3. and I wanted to control the board state as much as possible. I used creatures as removal just as often as I used them as my damage dealers. I rarely sent burn to the dome unless it was to finish them off or take advantage of collateral damage.

I sided out the Hordeling Outburst almost every game. I usually opted to bring in roast or arc lightning.

The finals went down like this:

Game one: Punning went up to I think 32 life off of two lands and an Ordeal of Heliod. At the end, I had him at 3 and I was at 5. I had a collateral Damage in my hand and not enough mana to cast it.

Game two: I controlled the board long enough to punch in for 20 damage rather quickly.

Game Three: The butts, they grew too big. I could not burn his heroic dudes fast enough and he over ran me.

I hope you all participate in future events. They are free and fun! Two of my favorite things.

MagicGatheringStrat: The Podcast Ep. 8

Dragons has made some Impacting Tremors on Standard Pauper and this week the combo of Brennon, Sam and Dan talk about the new hotness running infinitely wild on the format!

This type of crazy deck is what I love. If you could just shove in a [c]Vent Sentinel[/c] with some defenders it may become the greatest deck ever.

Now, lets look at an opening hand:

Reluctantly keeping. But I know I may be pitching the trips or the cruise when I cast Tormenting Voice.

The whole idea is to get [c]Impact Tremors[/c] on the field and spew out as many tokens as possible.

Now let’s look at the next six cards:

Saved by the top deck! Not back, but I am hoping to cast that Treasure Cruise as quick as I can.

What do you think? The deck is quirky and I am certain Roberto has plans for this deck. I just know that when I picture tokens coming down and causing damage when they hit, this is what will be going on in my brain:

And I will feel like this:

I love it! Reminds me of my Fate Reforged PreRelease sealed deck!

Now, lets look at an opening hand:

Control, Control, Control! That is the name of this opening hand. You need to keep your opponent off balance until you can make your move. What is your move? What are you going for?

Whirlwind Adept supported by Flurry of Horns, that is your goal.

Now let’s look at the next six cards:

Yikes! I hope you built and Arc, because this flood is real! Power our that Treasure Cruise as fast as you can!!!

Take a look at the curve:

More like a real curve this time.

So, what Dragons cards are you wanting to put in your deck?

Any new decks to show off?

Ok, now for the deck:

Since we have seen Boros heroic and WU heroic like every week, lets look at something slightly different:

Very cool that it is White Weenie splashing for Read the Bones and Harsh Sustenance.

Do you think there is room for: [c]Foul-Tongue Shriek[/c]? Seems tailor made for it.

Now, lets look at an opening hand:

Ideal turns:

Turn 1: Scoured Barrens
Turn 2: Selfless Cathar and Scoured Barrens
Turn 3: Plains and Sandsteppe Outcast making a token, attack for 1 with Cathar
Turn 4: Cast Triplicate Spirits
Turn 5: Harsh Sustenance for 6, opponent at 13, Swing for 6, opponent at 7
Turn 6: Sacrifice Cathar and swing for 11.

Now that is with nothing but the cards in your hand. Will that work? I guess if you only have 3 mana, that’s a pretty strong outcome.

Now let’s look at the next six cards:

No mana, but you have plays for days. This looks pretty strong.

If we decide to use [c]Foul-Tongue Shriek[/c], where would it go?

Personally, I would put it in place of [c]Inspired Charge[/c]. Yes, charge is a blow out. However, it doesn’t give you life and it costs double white and is a 4 cmc spell.

Lets look at that math above if we replace the charge with shriek.

On the draw, this would be your opening hand:

Turn 1: Scoured Barrens
Turn 2: Scoured Barrens, cast Selfless Cathar

Your hand looks like this:

Turn 3: Plains, Sandsteppe Outcast making a token, attack for 1 with Cathar.
Turn 4: Triplicate Spirits

Your hand looks like this:

Here is your board state:

boardstate 1

What do you do?

If you Harsh Sustenance for 6 and swing in, that is 13 damage.

If you double cast [c]Foul-Tounged Shriek[/c] and swing in, you gain 12 and they lose 12 and you potentially strike for 7 which would be lethal.

What would be the difference if you happen to have another plains, and Inspired Charge?

If you attack and cast charge, you strike in for 19 just like with the shriek, but you you gain no life.

If your opponent has blockers, they take no damage. With Shriek, they lose life regardless, same with Harsh Sustenance.

So which is better?

I really like the [c]Glaring Aegis[/c]. It speaks to me and my love of value.

T4 Men In Light Blue* by Adner
T4 Grixis Merchant of Asphodel* by rremedio1

Well, since the only thing new in the top 4 is a Grixis deck, let’s look at what Roberto has for us!

Cruise Watch: 2015
1st Place: 4 Cruise
2nd Place: 3 Cruise
3rd Place: 2 Cruise
4th Place: 3 Cruise

Ok, now for the deck:

[d title=”Grixis Merchant of Asphodel by Rremedio”]
Creatures
3 Gurmag Angler
4 Black Cat
4 Gray Merchant of Asphodel
4 Pharika’s Chosen
3 Generator Servant
1 Disciple of Phenax
1 Mnemonic Wall

Spells
3 Lightning Strike
3 Rakshasa’s Secret
3 Tormenting Voice
3 Treasure Cruise
2 Voyage’s End
1 Peel from Reality
1 Unmake the Graves
1 Void Snare

Lands
5 Swamp
4 Bloodfell Caves
4 Dismal Backwater
4 Evolving Wilds
2 Island
2 Mountain
2 Swiftwater Cliffs

Sideboard
2 Pharika’s Cure
2 Barrage of Boulders
2 Negate
2 Feast of Dreams
1 Voyage’s End
1 Disciple of Phenax
1 Rakshasa’s Secret [/d]

Now, lets look at an opening hand:

Turn 4 angler is pretty good, but is that fast enough? You have a bit of protection with voyage’s end. I am concerned this has too many high cost cards. You are years away from casting that treasure cruise.

Now let’s look at the next six cards:

So, what Dragons cards make this deck stronger?

What new cards make this deck weaker?

I would replace [c]Void Snare[/c] with [c]Sidisi’s Faithful[/c]. It can be a blocker if needed and it cannot be negated!

What do you think?
