Decklists, videos, etc …

What were your thoughts on Modern Silverblack this time around? It is one of my favorite PRE formats, so I hope you guys enjoyed it. I played the same list for all six rounds of Swiss, which is uncharacteristic of me and also partially why I didn’t record any matches this time around. The list felt *really* strong but had an issue against really aggressive match-ups. In all the matches I lost, the games were literally an issue of a single turn.

Every time.

I went 4-2 in the end which wasn’t enough to make top 8. Hell, even one person who went 4-1-1 didn’t make top 8. Here was my list.

[d title=”Silverblack Mindcrank by Bava (Modern Silverblack)”]
Land
4 Dismal Backwater
4 Jwar Isle Refuge
4 Evolving Wilds
3 Swamp
3 Island
4 Ghost Quarter

Two-Piece Combo
4 Duskmantle Guildmage
4 Mindcrank

Searchers / Support
3 Dimir Infiltrator
4 Muddle the Mixture
4 Æther Vial
4 Serum Visions
4 Gitaxian Probe

Disruption / Combo Starters
4 Inquisition of Kozilek
2 Duress
1 Gut Shot
4 Thought Scour

Sideboard
4 Relic of Progenitus
4 Echoing Truth
3 Drown in Sorrow
4 Negate [/d]

The key thing to note here is that this is a two-piece combo that is very hard to disrupt. If I get Mindcrank and Guildemage into play with 3 mana open, you lose. It’s not *always* that easy, but killing the guildmage in response doesn’t do a thing, since his ability stays in effect throughout the turn.

Aether Vial means you can combo safely with just 3 mana and as early as turn three. The disruption package is super-handy for staying alive but can also work to instigate the win-con if you don’t have another way to do so. My two losses were against Hexproof and Stompy, both of which executed their gameplan perfectly in killing me (just) before I could go off.

But enough about me, what about our winner?

Kelevra6 played Soul Sisters in rounds 1 and 2, going 1-1, and then switched to RW Scepter Control, which he played in various forms for the rest of the event. Here is the decklist he took into the finals.

[d title=”RW Scepter Control by Kelevra6 (Modern Silverblack)”]
Land
4 Wind-Scarred Crag
4 Boros Guildgate
9 Mountain
5 Plains

Creatures
4 Young Pyromancer
4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Seeker of the Way

Spells
4 Isochron Scepter
4 Lightning Helix
2 Boros Charm
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Path to Exile
3 Magma Jet
3 Faithless Looting
2 Dawn Charm

Sideboard
2 Magma Spray
2 Wear/Tear
2 Sudden Shock
2 Electrickery
1 Dawn Charm
1 Kor Firewalker
2 Relic of Progenitus
3 Calciderm [/d]

Here is his event recap:

“Rounds 1 and 2 I played the Souls Sister deck my opponents were both playing junk rites, I went 1-1. for the rest of the swiss I played boros scepter swiss deck. Round 3 I played against mono-red heroic, round 4 was against hexproof, round 5 my opponent and I could not find a time to our match resulting in the one draw I had, and round 6 I played against mono blue aggro.

“In the top 8 I play the boros scepter burn list for the first 2 rounds, playing against grindstation and stompy. finally,in the finals I played against infect in which I play boros scepter finals decklist.”

NewHJ, his opponent, took second place with this Infect list, which he piloted for the entire event:

[d title=”Infect by NewHJ (Modern Silverblack)”]
Land
20 Forest

Creatures
4 Glistener Elf
4 Blight Mamba
4 Ichorclaw Myr
4 Necropede

Spells
4 Mutagenic Growth
4 Rancor
4 Vines of Vastwood
4 Groundswell
4 Giant Growth
4 Apostle’s Blessing

Sideboard:
4 Nature’s Claim
3 Gut Shot
3 Fog
3 Ranger’s Guile
2 Slaughterhorn [/d]

Despite the fact that this is very nearly a Pauper list, it served NewHJ very well. His brief recap:

“I played against RW Burn, Grinding Station Combo (my defeat), UR Delver, Dirty Red (aka Blistering Rage), and Stompy. On top 8 against Grinding Station Combo again and BG Elves.”

Our third place finisher, Bobgar, played Stompy throughout the event, and was awesome enough to record his run and share his videos. Thanks, Bobgar!

Community League #8

Man, I always enjoy some Silverblack, but now it is time to set our sites forward and talk about the format for the next league. As always, everyone can make a pitch for a *single* choice. I will take the most popular nominations and put them in front of our winner, who will get to choose the format.

With all the holidays and stuff happening, we may not get League #8 started until the beginning of January, but if we seem to get squared away soon I won’t put it off that long.

Nominate a format in the comments below! While you’re there, let me know what you thought of our increased used of Challonge as a tournament tool this event, and any other thoughts you have about how these things are run.

Thanks!

Let the battles begin! Here is how this thing works. Please read everything below carefully. If it wasn’t important, I would not have taken the time to type it out. Please note that I am changing how match results are reported for this event. Check that out below.

Community League #7: Format and Rules

The format for league #7 is Modern Silverblack

About the Format

Modern Silverblack allows cards printed at the common and uncommon level (black and silver rarity symbols, you see) in Modern-legal sets.

Rarity-shifted (Purple) cards are not legal in Silverblack. We will be following the official Modern banned list.

In addition, we will ban [c]Intangible Virtue[/c] and [c]Expedition Map[/c].

The League Began on October 9, 2015

If you are participating you should receive ONE email from me with contact info. Let me know if you did not see that. I sent these emails out to the address you used to register on our site. I try very hard NOT to send people lots of emails. It is up to you to keep track on the site and get in touch with your opponents promptly. It will be up to each participant to contact their opponent by email to set up their match for the week. Don’t wait for your opponents to contact you; be proactive!

I am very strict concerning players that don’t communicate well. If your opponent says they are having a hard time getting in touch with you, and you don’t respond to my follow-up email in a timely fashion, your opponent will get the win for that week and you may be removed from the event. Check your email, respond to your email, email your opponents, email me. Short notes are fine, but KEEP IN TOUCH! Really, folks.

Since we got a great turnout and people love this format, I have added some additional Swiss rounds. We will play 6 weeks of Swiss and then cut to top 8 with the goal to finish the league by the end of November.

League Rules

1. The Modern Silverblack format will allow cards that were printed at the Common or Uncommon rarity levels in any set from Eighth Edition to the most current.

2. You get 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. A BYE counts as a win.

3. It is the responsibility of the winner to report their win. NEW: Sign up for a Challonge account with the same email you used to register on our site (or better yet, respond to the Challonge request that was sent to your email inbox.) You may update your match scores directly in Challonge or on our Events page.

3a. It is up to the winner to be able to provide proof of their victory. Take a screenshot or make sure you know how to access the replay on MTGO. If there is a dispute and the person who claimed they won cannot furnish proof, they will receive a loss and a DQ. This has never come up in all of our events, but I wanted to be clear anyway.

4. Communicate early and often. I will only send out the one email with all your contact information. Don’t lose it! Get in touch by email (it is much more effective than waiting around on MTGO). If no one communicates with each other or with me, that week’s pairing will be considered a draw and one or both players may be removed from the league. If one person is attempting to communicate and the other person is not, they should let me know. I will attempt to solve issues when I can, but when that doesn’t work out, the person who is trying to communicate will always get the win. Don’t wait until the last minute.

5. After the initial email all official league announcements will happen here on the site. Keep tabs on the Events page for all updates. You can also get updates by liking us on Facebook or following me on Twitter @bava_mtg.

6. We’ll play 6 weeks of Swiss and then cut to Top 8. The league will end by December 4.

7. You can drop at any time. Please let me know if you’d like to drop before the next week’s pairings go up. You will always be welcomed back into subsequent league events.

8. Chat about the league or share lists over in our forums.

9. You may keep the same list throughout the event or play a different list each week. If you spot someone who you think is playing illegal cards in their list, take a screenshot and send it along to me.

10. Contact me if you have any questions.

Building on a Budget for Modern Silverblack

Our upcoming league event will be devoted to this fantastic format. It’s fun and it’s far cheaper than Modern, true, but if you’re used to Pauper or Standard Pauper, Modern Silverblack can still seem quite expensive. Let’s take a look at some archetypes and lists that can be successful without breaking the bank.

Let’s start by looking at some lists that made it into the Top 8 during our last Modern Silverblack event.

[d title=”Silverblack Stompy by Sirpoptart15″]
Land
20 Forest
3 Treetop Village
Creatures
4 Arbor Elf
4 Llanowar Elves
4 Beastbreaker of Bala Ged
4 Strangleroot Geist
4 Leatherback Baloth
3 Kitchen Finks
4 Druid’s Familiar
Spells
4 Rancor
3 Overrun
3 Dismember
Sideboard
4 Fog
2 Vines of Vastwood
2 Kavu Predator
2 Krosan Grip
4 Needle Storm
1 Kitchen Finks [/d]

This is the winning list, and though it is slightly on the spendier side for what we want to look at, it is still just 23 tix or so to put together. A lot of that price is in the [c]Kitchen Finks[/c] and [c]Dismember[/c] so you could easily start with this shell and try to find some good replacements for those cards, coming out much cheaper.

[d title=”Silverblack Burn by Tangents”]
Land
13 Mountain
4 Evolving Wilds
Creatures
4 Hellspark Elemental
4 Young Pyromancer
4 Spark Elemental
Spells
4 Magma Jet
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Lava Spike
4 Rift Bolt
4 Searing Blaze
4 Searing Blood
2 Skullcrack
2 Flames of the Blood Hand
3 Shock
Sideboard
3 Volcanic Fallout
2 Molten Rain
2 Relic of Progenitus
2 Smash to Smithereens
3 Sulfur Elemental
3 Curse of the Pierced Heart [/d]

Tangents took this list 5-1 in regular play (losing only to Mono Black) and then lost mono green in the top 8. This is a super-strong, consistent list that will run you around 6 tix online.

[d title=”Mono_Black_Control by Greedy Foe”]

Lands
20 Swamp
2 Tectonic Edge
Creatures
4 Augur of Skulls
4 Gatekeeper of Malakir
4 Vampire Nighthawk
4 Gray Merchant of Asphodel
3 Shriekmaw
3 Phyrexian Rager
2 Fume Spitter
Spells
4 Inquisition of Kozilek
4 Sign in Blood
3 Undying Evil
2 Tragic Slip
1 Grim Harvest
Sideboard
3 Contaminated Ground
2 Geth’s Verdict
2 Duress
2 Illness in the Ranks
2 Nihil Spellbomb
1 Darkblast
1 Read the Bones
1 Drown in Sorrow
1 Shriekmaw [/d]

This MBC list runs about 15 tix but 12 of that is in those [c]Inquisition of Kozilek[/c]. Swap those out with a cheaper discard spell (or something else) and you’re under 5 tix, easy. Greedy Foe played this twice and won with it both times.

Now we’ll take a look at some of the lists presented in Gatherling events from as recent as August 2014.

[d title=”Grinding Station by Farfishere”]
Creatures
4 Etherium Sculptor
4 Myr Retriever
4 Riddlesmith

Spells
4 Chromatic Sphere
4 Chromatic Star
4 Conjurer’s Bauble

4 Locket of Yesterdays
4 Terrarion
4 Thoughtcast

Lands
16 Island

SIDEBOARD
4 Tormod’s Crypt
4 Echoing Truth
3 Gigadrowse
2 Rapid Hybridization
2 Spell Pierce [/d]

Farf went 5-0 in the most recent event with this combo list, beating a lot of scepter control along with auras and an aggro list. Total cost comes in under 4 tix.

[d title=”RUG Tron by longtimegone”]

Creatures
4 Artisan of Kozilek
4 Brutalizer Exarch
4 Mulldrifter
3 Acidic Slime
2 Eternal Witness
Spells
4 Chromatic Star
4 Firespout
4 Prophetic Prism
3 Reap and Sow
3 Sylvan Scrying
2 Gruul Signet
1 Crystal Shard
Lands
4 Forest
4 Urza’s Mine
4 Urza’s Power Plant
4 Urza’s Tower
2 Vivid Crag
2 Vivid Creek
1 Shimmering Grotto
1 Urza’s Factory
SIDEBOARD
4 Timely Reinforcements
3 Sowing Salt
3 Pyroclasm
2 Relic of Progenitus
2 Back to Nature
1 Nihil Spellbomb [/d]

You’re looking at about 12 tix for a solid Tron list like this one, which is strong even without [c]Expedition Map[/c].

[d title=”Affinity by denofbears”]
Creatures
4 Frogmite
4 Memnite
4 Ornithopter
4 Signal Pest
4 Vault Skirge
1 Myr Enforcer
Spells
4 Chromatic Star
4 Cranial Plating
4 Galvanic Blast
4 Springleaf Drum
3 Thoughtcast
2 Ensoul Artifact
2 Steelshaper’s Gift
Lands
4 Darksteel Citadel
4 Ghost Quarter
4 Island
4 Mountain
SIDEBOARD
4 Whipflare
3 Hallow
2 Welding Jar
2 Spell Pierce
2 Go for the Throat
1 Ancient Grudge
1 Vandalblast [/d]

For under 5 tix you can live the dream with one of the fastest decks in Modern.

[d title=”RDW by ShiftingShadows”]
Creatures
4 Boggart Ram-Gang
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
4 Fanatic of Mogis
4 Firefist Striker
4 Goblin Wardriver
4 Pyreheart Wolf
4 Rakdos Cackler
1 Gore-House Chainwalker
Spells
4 Incinerate
4 Lightning Bolt
2 Magma Jet
Lands
21 Mountain
SIDEBOARD (15 Cards)
4 Volcanic Fallout
4 Molten Rain
4 Goblin Ruinblaster
3 Relic of Progenitus [/d]

Here is another brutal aggressive deck which shows off [c]Fanatic of Mogis[/c] as a nice finisher and runs less than 5 tix.

[d title=”Esper Spirits by RRemedio”]
Creatures
4 Doomed Traveler
3 Drogskol Captain
Spells
4 Lingering Souls
4 Midnight Haunting
4 Spectral Procession
3 Devouring Greed
3 Favorable Winds
3 Go for the Throat
3 Path to Exile
2 Brave the Elements
2 Triplicate Spirits
2 Zealous Persecution
Lands
4 Arcane Sanctum
4 Plains
4 Vivid Meadow
3 Island
3 Sejiri Refuge
3 Swamp
2 Orzhov Basilica
SIDEBOARD
3 Rain of Tears
3 Kor Firewalker
3 Castigate
2 Tempest of Light
2 Rootborn Defenses
2 AEtherize [/d]

Last but not least, Roberto shows off a list with some real spirit. This list will run you about 12 tix but you can shave some off by substituting out the [c]Path to Exile[/c]. I recommend [c]Condemn[/c] and [c]Tragic Slip[/c] as good go-to budget replacements.

That’s it for my suggestions, for now. I’m sure you guys have lots more to share!

If you have a good budget list for Modern Silverblack to suggest, post it down in the comments.

Community League #7: Format and Rules

As the winner of league #6, Karakusk got to choose the format from among those with the most votes. The options I presented to him included Modern Silverblack, Extended Silverblack, and Standard Pauper.

Karakusk chose, and the format for league #7 is Modern Silverblack!

About the Format

Modern Silverblack allows cards printed at the common and uncommon level (black and silver rarity symbols, you see) in Modern-legal sets.

We will be following the official Modern banned list.

The Standard Pauper Show, Issue 22

Section 1: This week in Standard Pauper

Well, without Dan, the show is a little less lively. It appears we need some Swedish spices to flavor up this pauper show. What would be a Swedish spice? There has to be some secret ingredient in those meatballs.

Section 2: Not Pauper…

Since I was sick this week I didn’t have a lot of time for this article. I put my efforts into the YouTube show so I hope you watched it.

What I want to talk about though, is Modern.

Did you watch the World Championship this weekend? If you did, I hope you like Jeskai. Because Jeskai was all up in that coverage.

This leads me to my topic.

“Modern has become unmanageable and will become a detriment to all future card development.”

There, I said it. Though fun, if the community forces Wizards to continue to support this as a format, future card sets will be held back and become boring. I am not calling for bans. I am not calling for the abolition of a format. I am saying it is time to cut it off.

That’s right. Modern should start with 8th Edition and end with Khans Block. I think ending with M15 would be better for the format but that may be too much to ask.

Here are the reasons:

  • Standard will not change.
  • The current Modern card base is huge, it is in no desperate need to expand.
  • This will not affect Legacy or Vintage unless we really really want to go deep with reprints.
  • Imagine being able to print really old cards because there is no fear of them going crazy in Modern.
  • This would not affect supplemental sets like Modern Masters IV: The Moderning. Also, cards could be brought into the format through these supplemental sets after further testing.
  • Design space would be wide open. You would free the dev team to explore all manner of interactions. All the lessons learned could make all future sets a shining beacon of streamlined design and ultra playability. You want Urza’s Saga redone without the super broken cards? Now you have opened yourself up to that possibility.
  • With the next set being about saving Ugin, the entire Magi-Verse is primed for a reboot. New Alara! New Mirrodin! New Kamigawa? Heck, why not?

Now I have taken a lot of flack from community mouthpieces for speaking out about bans and basic design before. And I am looking forward to more of it now. This proposal is different than all my previous postulations. I am asking for only one thing. Lets just start fresh.

I will not come up with a name for the new format. Modern 2 sounds boring and extended has already been used. I will let the good people of the internet come up with a name. Please use your power wisely. “Dickbutt” is not a name we want to use on ESPN 8: The Ocho during Worlds coverage.

Community Participation Leagues: #1 Wrap Up and #2 Update

Magicgatheringstrat.com Community League 1 Wrap Up League 2 Update!

Registration is open, sign up for League #2. The format is Classic Pauper!

Hello Ladies and Gentlenerds!

League #2 Update!

Welcome to the week before the storm! Next week the epic battle will begin. Blood will be spilt, and mana will be burned.

The turn out so far has been amazing. 39 people at the time of the writing, and a bunch of new people. Welcome new guys! You are all amazing people, and I can’t wait to play you all!

I’m not going to talk much about the second League this week, that’s for next week, but I do have a challenge for you all between now and 9/8/14.

You have an MTGO buddy list, right? Some players you like, some bots you like to shop at. I have a buddy list, and all you wonderful people are on it. As some of you may know I have been talking to some of my buddies about joining the league, and then dropping them the link to the registration. People love leagues, and the people who love Pauper really, really love Pauper. The whole thing almost sells itself.

This week my challenge to you all is to find the person on your buddy list who you think is the coolest player, or the guy who loves Pauper the most, and invite them to the league. Just ask if they like fun, if they crave competition, if they want to bask in the glow of winning games over such ardent foes. Then give them the link, http://magicgatheringstrat.com/2014/08/community-participation-league-2-launch/, then drop the microphone and walk off the stage.

It’s all about word of mouth, grassroots, and community building gents, get out there and spread the word if you don’t mind.

Thank you all kindly!

Pauper Gauntlet #2 Plug!

It’s that time of year again, when a certain Swedish Viking goes completely insane and plays like 600 games of Pauper with a bunch of different decks till one is crowned the winner.

Yes, folks, it’s the Second Annual Pauper Gauntlet. Dan asked me to link up the deck submission for him, he’s hoping to get about 100 decks, and at the time of this writing he has 33, with a few pending. I submitted 10 myself, and managed to get 4 in. 2 of my builds, and 2 I have seen results on, and just want to have Dan play.

You can brew a deck and submit it, or just submit a deck you saw someone else playing, and think it would be fun for Dan to play. The sky is the limit!

The rule is if you submit the deck you also need to write up a sideboard plan for Dan. He will be happy to let you know how, and is really looking forward to all the decks he can get.

Here is the link for you all. Go, my little ones, and submit many decks.

Community League #1 Wrap Up!

So at the end of the whole thing I thought the League went amazing. There were a few bumps in the road here and there. Starting a League during prime vacation time was a big one. Who knew so many people all over the world left their dwellings for weeks at a time to go stay in other dwellings far, far away?

There was attrition, people leaving, or losing interest, which I expected, but by the last few weeks I really felt that the people that were still standing was a great core group of guys ready to play and have fun, and to me that was what the whole thing was about.

I also had way, way more fun than my 3-5 record stated. Really, I am not the best loser in the world, I over-analyze play mistakes, and am my worst critic, but getting to play everyone I got to play made me feel like I learned a bunch. Like always be ready to play Avery61 cause he will play evil cards against you.

I’ve got my eyes on you sir.

The epic Final game came down to Sirpoptart vs Greedyfoe. The decks from the finals!

Raw force against a deck full of burn. Epic battle. Sirpoptart did pull it out 2-1. To quote Greedyfoe, “Burn has a hard time dealing with a [c]Leatherback Baloth[/c].” I also have a feeling the [c]Kitchen Finks[/c] pulled their own weight in the match up as well.

The link to the forums where many many of the top 8 have been kind enough to post up their favorite decks from the 8 weeks. Jason Moore even has some video content up there! Go and look, guys!

In summation before we go, I had a blast not only playing you guys the first league, but also running the league. I am really looking forward to a strong turn out for the second league, and just as much fun for everyone involved. It’s a great time for Pauper, with the weekend Daily events, the Weekendlys, and Dan starting the Gauntlet up again.

And that’s it for this week folks!

Next week will bring the lightning and the thunder, and a light warm rain that is good for grass and flower growth. I can’t wait!

Community Participation League, Week 8: Top 8

Hello Ladies and Gentlenerds!

It’s time for the Top 8 and I couldn’t be more excited!

Without any nonsense here is the Top 8 Round One pairings.

Avery61 vs Casanova
Rahrahrah vs Sirpoptart
Greedyfoe vs Bamboorush
Leosoeckler vs Tangents

You Top Eighters will have until Wednesday the 20th at 9 pm CST to play Round One. I’ll then post the Round 2 pairings in the comments and you will have until 9pm CST Friday the 22nd to play, then for the Finals you will have until 9pm on Monday the 25th to epically battle!

Next week my article will be on Wednesday the 27th and it will contain the format of the Second Season of the Community League as well as open the registration. And have all sorts of fun new rules and stuff. Rules are just the best. I think you have to love rules to love Magic! Rules make the game! Without rules there is chaos!

Voting for the Second League. Speaking of rules! Voting starts now! Vote once for your favorite format. I’d prefer you vote in the comments of this article, but I know some people have been having issues with the new comment set up. Email me if you need to. I’ll include you as a note in the comments.

When you vote pick your format, you should also pick a format. My pick for the first League was Format Modern Format Silverblack. Two crazy formats doing their thing to produce a fun time for everyone!

Examples, you ask? Examples you get!

Standard Pauper.
Or Silverblack Block Wars.
Or Modern One Buck Challenge.
Or Pauper Tribal.
Or Heirloom Core Sets only.

Wait, don’t pick the last one. Sounds lame.

If you just pick Standard or Modern or Tribal your vote will only be for just that broad format. Which is fine if that’s what you want.

Everyone can vote! But if you vote I hope you also play! Even if it’s a format you aren’t crazy about it’s still going to be fun. Voting will last till 9pm CST on Monday the 25th. I will calculate the votes and email the Grand Champion of League one! They will let me know what they picked by my Wednesday the 27th article so I can let all you amazing people know!

Fun. Amazingly fun. Then the Second League opens for registration that very day, no waiting around, registration then lasts till Monday September 1st at 9pm CST!, a little over two weeks! The League will start a week later on Monday September the 8th. Gives everyone a week to get cards and brew up decks!!!

I will be sending out a completely complete Season One Spreadsheet to everyone in the next few days, so that way everyone can see how they did overall!! Fun fun!

Last thing to wrap up this Top 8 Week article. Keep it short and sweet!

ANNOUNCEMENT

Denofbears, who is in the League, and Hexalite, who didn’t make it in but is a big fan of the Modern Silverblack format, have revived the Silverblack PRE on gatherling.com. Denofbears put up a link in the week 7 comments but I wanted to get it out there again. 14 people showed up week one with only 3 days notice. That’s really really good for such a short turn around for a PRE. And they don’t currently even have prize support. The format has legs, ladies and gents, get in on the ground floor!

Here is a link to the Wizards forum page for their new PRE event. Its runs every Saturday night at 7pm EST. So 8pm CST which means I am going to get to play sometimes! I love it!

http://community.wizards.com/forum/magic-online-player-run-events/threads/4125626

You register each week through gatherling.com! Check it out, it’s a great site for weekly PRE Events.

That’s it, ladies and gents. Next week’s article is going to be a summation of my experiences of running the first League, so if any of you want your thoughts to be known email me up you know the way to do that! I will include any thing I get, videos If I can get them to work, card reviews, favorite deck lists, you send it, I will use it ya’ll.

Also, now is a great time to share your decklists, and I know just the spot!

I am looking forward to hearing all about the epic battling that will happen amongst you amazing 8 who are bringing it all home.

Have fun! Battle!

And for us not Top 8 folks feel free to shoot each other a game request. I’m happy to get my game on in any fun format you guys want to play whenever I am on.

Till next week guys may your Spirits always Linger, and may your opponent never play any mass removal. That’s just mean. Mean.

Community Participation League, Week 7: Mega Update!

Hello Ladies and Gentlenerds,

Welcome to week 7 everyone, lots of amazing info to share with you all tonight. But first an apology for last week. I was sick as a dog, a sick sick dog, till Saturday morning, just the worst I have felt in years, and by that point I knew it was better to focus on this week, and just let last week go as far as doing a write up. Lots of good Magic still went down I see, so I am happy about that. I am feeling much better now, and just in time too.

I have been getting a few questions in my email these last few days about the league.

The first one is when is this crazy thing wrapping up.

The second is what are the standings.

To answer the two questions!

Week 8 is going to be the top 8. I think we have put on an amazing League day and date, but I am actually looking forward to a format shift at this point. I like to keep things fresh, and the fact that most of us haven’t missed a game in 6 weeks is amazing. You all should be proud. I know I am.

The second answer is right here. I did the Points for you. If you guys want the exact break down of your game wins let me know, but I really only used those to determine top 8.

When I sat down I knew that the Great Mr Avery61 was without a doubt going to be our top seeded player going an amazing 10-2, but I didn’t realize that we had 5 other players with 27 points under their belts. Well played you guys, you all picked up an early loss, but kept right on rolling to an almost perfect record.

From there the points ranged from 24 all the way to 7. Thanks Ztrman for coming in near the end to even our numbers out. I hope you hop on early this next league. I love players who always bring their A Game. I think we all did, regardless of points! I know I only felt shut out of one game this whole league. Avery61 I’m looking at you and your evil Scepter deck!

Enough of my rambling!! Standings as per points

So with the point total calculated and a deeper look into the game wins this is our top 8 for the last week.

Top 8
1. Avery61 Points 27 Game Wins 10-2
2. Rahrahrah Points 27 Game Wins 10-3
3. Greedyfoe Points 27 Game Wins 10-4
4. Leozoeckler Points 27 Game Wins 10-4
5. Tangents Points 27 Game Wins 10-4
6. Bamboorush Points 27 Game Wins 10-5
7. Sirpoptart Points 26 Game Wins 10-2-1
8. Casanova Points 24 Game Wins 8-5

Pretty Clear cut all the way down I think! All the people with 27 points, Sirpoptart being the king of the 26 points hill, and then Casanova being the only wonder beast to get the total of 24.

Top 8 week will be next week. So we are going to do a Top 8 league week. I am going to post the Article as normal Monday 8/18 night. It will have the Quarterfinal 4 matches. You all will have till Wednesday 8/20 to play the first round. Then I will pair for the Final 4 which will have to Friday 8/22. Then the Finals will have till Monday the 25th at 8:00pm CST to happen! I thought about doing a one-time only regular tournament for the top 8, and we may try that for the second league, but I think in the spirit of the league, this works the best.

I am cool with each round each player playing different decks, or you can dance with the girl you brought and play the same 75 the whole time. Whatever makes you beautiful butterflies happy!

A follow up point, if you are in the Top 8 and you know you are going to be unable to play 1-3 games during the week of 8/18 to 8/25 just let me know, and I will open up spot 8 to the next ranked player. That way we avoid byes. All my Top 8 guys played every week so I don’t think that’s going to be an issue at all though! But things come up, I know it, You know it.

So what does that mean for all the wonderful people who didn’t Top 8. First off you are all amazing, and you should be clapping at how well you did! Second off! The voting for the format for the second league begins!

That’s right! The winner of league one gets to pick the format, but the community is going to have a voice. If you want a format vote for it in the comments of the Week 8 article. The format with the most votes get added to the list the winner of League One gets to pick from!

The formats that are already picked are
1. Heirloom
2. Pauper
3. Standard Pauper
4. Standard Silverblack
5. ? Community Choice?

You many notice the options are budget formats pretty much, we want everyone to be able to throw a low cost deck together and have fun, and budget is a good way to go. If you guys vote in Modern or Standard we will all still have fun I think but those formats have a more Pay to Play slant then Heirloom or Standard Pauper. But the will of the people rising up as one will speak the loudest of all.

I love going rogue so I’m going to have fun any which way.

I will say if the format is Heirloom we are going to have some extra rules, as that format seems to be a mess from what I can tell. Turn two kills are gross.

So yeah. Good times for everyone, and the prizes oh yes the prizes. Those will be awarded going out of week 8. I have them. You wanted them!

So Voting will go till Monday the 25th at 8:00 pm CST. I am planning on doing a Wednesday article that week, so the Grand Champion of the first League will have those scant 3 days to pick the format. I know they spend hours upon hours worrying over such a heady choice. I know I would. The fate of the many rests in their mighty mighty hands.

I will announce the format that Wednesday the 27th, registration will open right then and last for two weeks till September the 8th. I learned a bunch doing this first league, and want to be more prepared the second one going in. Plus brewers need time to brew, and get cards and all that good stuff!

Any questions! All you crazy guys know how to reach me, and I hope I’ve done a good job helping out as I can!

So week 7 is really just going to be a fun week!! I’ll still record the points and everything so when I send out the spreadsheet to all you cool cats you will have all the info at your little fingertips! But I wanted to give the top 8 a week to get ready, mentally prepare, and tech out their decks! Play your matches, as that’s what we are here to do right, play Magic and chew bubble gum.

And I seem to be completely out of bubble gum!

Week 7 Pairings!!
Aranarth vs Magicgatherinstrat2
Avery61 vs Fanofhistory
Bamboorush vs Vaultboyhunter
Bava vs Deluxeicoff
Bocco123 vs Greedyfoe
Casanova vs Carnuz

And that’s it. The free week!!! The calm before the epic storm. It will sweep the land like a tornado full of Flounders and squids. Don’t laugh squids have island walk.

Sorry about the game play light article this week! But focusing on wrapping League One up and getting set for League two is 110% of my brain right now!!

Two weeks ago I brought up my Modern Silverblack Cube, if anyone has any interest in drafting it let me know! I am throwing a link in. Also If anyone wants to build a community cube like Limited Resources has that sounds like fun. Like everyone who wants to play donates 45 cards to it, and we just go from there? I dunno. I just like cube so much.

Here is the link to mine. I am in the process of updating it right now so pardon the mess. The breakdown is in the description. It’s a big boy, a 720, multicolor heavy, and just fun!

http://tappedout.net/mtg-cube-drafts/silverblack-modern-cube/?cat=color

If we can get 8 people together we would just draft on Tappedout.net, I would temp trade you any cards you draft that you may not have in your collection, and then we would pair up and play. Fun times will be had by all!

And that’s everything this week guys, you are all amazing, and I can’t wait for the Top 8!!!

Faithless Looting #1: Sliver Me Timbers

The Faithless Looting article series will cover budget play across formats, and there WILL BE PRIZES! If you have a favorite budget deck (or deck in a budget format) you’d like me to cover, just let me know in the comments. Suggestions are always welcome.

This week, since we’re neck deep in Modern Silverblack at the moment with our league event, I thought I would cover the Silverblack deck I used for weeks one through three, with moderate results. The deck is, as you may have guessed, Slivers. Here is the list.

[d title=”Midrange Slivers (Modern Silverblack)”]
Slivers
4 Manaweft Sliver
4 Predatory Sliver
4 Striking Sliver
4 Virulent Sliver
4 Frenetic Sliver
4 Dormant Sliver
4 Firewake Sliver
4 Gemhide Sliver

Sliver Finders
4 Lead the Stampede

Sliver Enablers
4 Abundant Growth
4 Evolving Wilds
1 Mountain
1 Island
1 Plains
13 Forest

Cheeky Sideboard
4 Harmonic Sliver
4 Liquimetal Coating
3 Marrow Shards
4 Back to Nature
[/d]

So yeah, the deck is pretty all-in on the Sliver plan. A note about some of the card choices.

[c]Manaweft[/c] and [c]Gemhide Sliver[/c]s make us able to play a four-color Sliver deck pretty consistently. Along with the [c]Abundant Growth[/c]s, we have 12 green spells that let us make a mana of any color. This allows us to run mainly Forests and still cast everything we need to cast. The concept of “five-color green” isn’t new, of course, this is just the Sliver version of it.

[c]Firewake Sliver[/c] and [c]Frenetic Sliver[/c] do a number of things for us. Firewake Sliver gives all our guys haste, which means we can easily chain off slivers when we have Manaweft or Gemhide in play, and all our one-mana slivers become essentially free. Just as importantly, they provide Sliver sac outlets: this is great for avoiding removal (Frenetic Sliver in particular gives all our slivers a 50/50 chance of living through any targeted removal or board wipe) and is also necessary at some point if you have a [c]Dormant Sliver[/c] on the table, as you won’t be able to attack until that guy is gone.

[c]Dormant Sliver[/c] is a card-drawing powerhouse or, more often than not, a big ol’ eater of removal. Still, if he stays on the board for even a turn, he can do really crazy things. This deck can easily draw 30 cards in a turn with just one of these guys out and a Firewake + Mana Sliver on the table.

You’ll recognize most of the other Slivers from Pauper. [c]Virulent Sliver[/c] ignores life gain, which can be very useful; [c]Striking Sliver[/c] creates really great blocking states; [c]Predatory Sliver[/c] is our only ‘Lord’ and is quite handy because otherwise we have a whole lot of 1/1s.

Our only non-Sliver, non-mana spell is [c]Lead the Stampede[/c]. The potential to draw 5 cards for 3 mana is amazing. It’s almost always at least a [c]Divination[/c], and often much better.

The sideboard is fun in that it has a combo built into it.

[c]Harmonic Sliver[/c] + [c]Liquimetal Coating[/c] = Whenever you play a Sliver destroy one of your opponent’s permanents. It’s very handy against Tron.

Harmonics are themselves great against Affinity and Aura builds, or anything else dependent on artifacts and enchantments. [c]Marrow Shards[/c] kills tokens and white weenies and costs 0 mana to cast, which we love. Finally, because Hexproof kills us otherwise, [c]Back to Nature[/c] is in the board in full force, though the full 4-of is probably overkill on top of the Harmonic Slivers.

Here is my match against Brennon playing Hexproof. It was my one shining moment so far in the league.

I played three matches with Slivers in league, and only went 1-2. I beat Hexproof, then lost to RB Control and Mono-Green Tribal Warriors. I think the deck is ‘good’, and I think it is fun, but I also think it could be better.

This is where you come in! This is where PRIZES come in too!

Challenge #1: Sliver Me Timbers

The challenge is simple: build me a better Slivers deck for Modern Silverblack.

Better can mean a lot of things. It can mean more competitive, certainly, but it can also mean more fun or more creative. There are some Slivers from M15 that weren’t available when I put this together. Maybe some of them should be added?

The idea of a “Slivers” deck also allows for some wiggle room; in this case, we’ll say the hard rule is that at least 50% of your total creature count in your main board needs to be made up of Slivers. So if you have 24 creatures in your main, at least 12 needs to be Slivers. No creature-less decks, though; include at least 4 Slivers in your deck, even if they are the only creatures.

Submit your Sliver brews in the comments below by 12 noon Pacific Time (GMT -7) on Sunday, August 10.

I will pick up to three of my favorite brews to play on MTGO and will declare one brew the winner. Whoever submits the winning brew will win two items randomly selected from my Loot Crate stash. As of now, ALL items I’ve opened in the June and July loot crates are available, so check out the videos to see what kind of cool swag you might score.

Community Participation League, Week 5

Hello Ladies and Gentlenerds,

Week 4 was amazing and it is done and over. Thank you guys for getting your games in and communicating with me about what is going on.

I have good news and bad news.

Bad news first Skjall has dropped from the League due to computer issues, and ‘no silver bullet’ has dropped due to time crunch, as has Thejerkwidasmirk. Thanks guys for letting me know, and please try again next league. I would love to have you back.

I am also doing the thing I hate to do and removing some inactive players. Again these are folks who haven’t played in the last two weeks, but have also went radio silent on me. I send weekly emails on the weekend to everyone who hasn’t reported wins or losses. Most of you guys are just amazing at letting me know what’s going on. I welcome all of these guys back for the next league as well, and If you want to play some more with us this time let me know, I’ll work you back in.

I’m also removing

Basedx
jimmygato
Pmd
rafl
rainmakerluke
Modin

If you love something, set it free, and if it comes back to you keep it in a jar in the closet so it can’t get away again … or something like that, right.

So that takes us to 34 people.

The good news now, please.

M15 is legal! Play those cards, guys! Some pretty cool stuff going on right now! It’s a core set, and I have to say I haven’t been this excited about a core set sense 7th Edition. [c]Frost Lynx[/c] is an early runner for my favorite card in set. I did have 3 in the Prerelease Sealed I did.

Another thing!

Cube Fever is going around. There is no cure. I have a cube. Its Modern. It’s online. Its Silverblack. Its a 720. If you guys ever want to draft it let me know. I’ve never got to draft it. I have all the cards for it, and think it would be tons of fun.

Deck lists!

Carnuz and denofbears have been super cool about sharing some deck lists with me and I wanted to include some of them for you guys to look over. I am also doing one of mine! Everybody likes deck lists, I always say.

This is Dega Control. It’s a deck full of bees. Mean bees.

I want you guys to get your matches in, and if you stare into the bright burning intensity of Bears’ mind … well, you might not be capable of playing Magic anymore.

My favorite out of the decks he shared is this!

Community Participation League, Week Two

Silver Black League Week 2

Hello Ladies and Gentlenerds!

So the first week of the League is in the bag. I am happy and impressed that so many matches got played. We have had some changes to the amount of people in the league. Lordlogan has dropped from the league, and Modin is on vacation for a few weeks. So for the time being I am running the league as if we had 48 people.

I didn’t get to see many matches or do anything beyond helping out with emails, and trying to match make as I could. Remember guys, don’t hesitate to email each other to get matches set up.

I feel that for the most part everyone is trying to get their matches in, but not responding to messages on the client, or emails that I or other people are sending shows that there are a few people who may not have weighed time obligations correctly when joining. Going into week 3 I am going to evaluate anyone with Draw records in consecutive weeks and go off of whether or not they are answering emails, and working to get matches set up, and done. I may remove some not responsive people. I don’t want to, but we are large enough at this time to cut people if they aren’t in it to win it.

On the other side of the coin, if you joined and now know things aren’t working out for you, let me know you want to drop, and give it a try in the next League!!!

For next weeks article I am taking submissions if anyone wants to share deck lists with me. If you think your deck is snazzy or fun and you want to share it with the world email it to me, and I will be happy to include it. The same goes if you are making videos or anything, screen caps or anything! I am always happy to include content!!

I’m also trying to get a better idea of what area of the world everyone lives in at this point. Out of the 48 people I only got emails back from about 20 people. If anyone else wants to let me know email me and I will add it to the spreadsheet and I will send it along.
