Unfortunately, this is an approximation. Until the database is updated, I would strongly recommend (ie. begging) you post the list in the comments section of the deck page. Otherwise, I won’t be able to fully extol the virtues of your decks.

The interesting thing is that this deck took down both SPDC and MPDC this week. That is no small feat. The fact that it is mono colored makes me instantly love it!

Now, lets look at an opening hand:

Now I want to show you a thing of beauty:

Mmmm dat curve! It is so beautiful. My heart can barely stand it.

Now let’s look at the next six cards:

So, what can we say about this deck? First of all, you have blockers. The scorpion, gladewatcher and the grizzly are going to hold everything back. Also, once the grizzly hits in the ground you can attack with both watchers. The biggest issue is going to be your finisher. Those elk are far away, and if you aren’t careful, you may never see them.

Section 3: The League

Well, as you know by now, I did not win. I came in second. That’s right, I am a big number 2.

Here is my deck list:

[d title=”MonoRed Heroic by Cyrulean (Standard Silverblack)”]
Creatures
4 Akroan Crusader
2 Mardu Scout
4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Satyr Hoplite
4 Foundry Street Denizen

Spells
2 Hordeling Outburst
3 Collateral Damage
4 Titan’s Strength
3 Wild Slash
3 Dragon Mantle
4 Hammerhand
3 Lightning Strike

Land
20 Mountain

Sideboard
1 Blinding Flare
2 Frenzied Goblin
1 Magma Jet
3 Scouring Sands
3 Arc Lightning
2 Humble Defector
1 Lightning Strike
2 Roast
[/d]

I wanted nothing over cmc 3. and I wanted to control the board state as much as possible. I used creatures as removal just as often as I used them as my damage dealers. I rarely sent burn to the dome unless it was to finish them off or take advantage of collateral damage.

I sided out the Hordeling Outburst almost every game. I usually opted to bring in roast or arc lightning.

The finals went down like this:

Game one: Punning went up to I think 32 life off of two lands and an Ordeal of Heliod. At the end, I had him at 3 and I was at 5. I had a collateral Damage in my hand and not enough mana to cast it.

Game two: I controlled the board long enough to punch in for 20 damage rather quickly.

Game Three: The butts, they grew too big. I could not burn his heroic dudes fast enough and he over ran me.

I hope you all participate in future events. They are free and fun! Two of my favorite things.

Community League #4: Winner!

community league 4 banner

Wow, are you guys ready to play in a format where Heroic isn’t such a big thing? It’s back to back Heroic wins in the last two league; I think we need a break from any format with the word “Standard” in it. What say you?

None of which is to detract from the victory of our … victor.

League #4: Standard Silverblack – Winner!

Congrats to Punninglinguist for his win, piloting UW Heroic in the finals against Cyrulean, who fought valiantly with his Mono Red Heroic list to steal the win but who, in his own words, fell just one mana short from taking the match. Sounds like some good Magic to me!

For winning the event, Punninglinguist gets 10 tickets and the final vote in the format for our next event.

As the top-ranking patron, Cyrulean also earns 10 tickets for the event.

Congrats to you both!

The veil of secrecy may now be lifted. My list was out there for the world to see the entire event, and I content that it could have won the whole thing with slightly better draws. That said, I will post my list in the forums, and you should too.

Post your Standard Silverblack lists here.

Here’s Punninglinguist’s winning UW Heroic list.

Punninglinguist says: Thanks to bava for running a great event! Here is my 7-0 decklist, which got refined a little during the course of the tournament, with Ajani’s Presence gradually moving from the main to the sideboard.

Nominate a format of our next league

What should we play next? I am personally vetoing anything with the word “Standard” in it; aside from that, though, the field is open.

Write your choices in the comments below. Whichever choices get the most mentions / votes will be brought in front of our winner, who will get to decide between them.

We’ll get the next league running in early- to mid-May.

Thanks to everyone for participating in our fourth Community League. I hope you all had a great time, and will join us for league #5 coming next month.

Cheers! /bava

Hey gang!

Check out the week one article for a reminder on rules, reporting, and prize payouts.

There are no more email reminders so hopefully you all made it here to read this, anyway.

Week Four for Bava

I was feeling good about my list going into this week. Avery61 was on RDW and I had played the match-up once in practice and won handily. It wasn’t quite so easy this time, though. Here is the video:

Top 8 Pairings

We had a lot of non-reporting and non-communication happening, so I had to make some decisions at the end of week 4. Basically, people who communicated with me won vs people who did not (though I did always try and get in touch with both parties myself, first) and if neither play communicated they received a draw. Anyone who didn’t communicate in week 4 was not eligible to make it into the top 8.

Please remember that communication is the most vital aspect of running a league like this, and it makes my life a lot easier!

With further ado, here they are. If you have any questions, get in touch.

Our goal is to finish top 8 by the end of next weekend (April 19) and declare a winner.

Good luck, have fun!

Week Three for Bava

Just some slight tweaks to my mono-black devotion list this week. [c]Child of Night[/c] was too awkward with [c]Drown in Sorrow[/c] so I cut her and added in a couple [c]Dead Drop[/c] though I really think that card is too clunky. I played against Dan in week 3, who was on the UW Heroic list that is very popular so far in this event. Here is the video:

I also played a fun practice match against _ShipIt_ running Mono Red Heroic / RDW. The big question in my MBC list is about [c]Ulcerate[/c] and, in general, all the shocks I give myself with the list. Surely that is a bad thing against aggressive lists like red? Let me know what you think.

Week Two for Bava

I updated my list slightly from week one (mono black devotion) and played it with updates against rremedio1 for week two. The deck performed much better with the updates and I was able to edge out a win two games to one. Roberto was playing a Sultai control list around [c]Temur Sabertooth[/c], which is super-strong. I will send out one more email today, but it will be the last one for this event! In the future check out the events page to get updates.

Week One for Bava

I played Mono-Black Devotion in week one. I feel like it’s viable, but I stumbled a few too many times against UW Heroic. No edict effects is a big deal. I may run the list again for week 2; the removal is so good and the wincons are real.

Here are some videos: my official league match, some practices matches with the same list, and then Brennon playing a practice match against Roberto.

Community League #4: Standard Silverblack, Week 1

community league 4 banner

Get your Standard Silverblack lists together, because it’s time to get this league rolling! Here is a quick reminder of how this thing works.

League Rules

1. Standard Silverblack lists may include commons and uncommons only from the Standard format. You may play a new list every week or keep the same list, so long as each list is Standard Silverblack legal.

2. You get 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw. A BYE counts as a win.

3. It is the responsibility of the winner to report their win. They should do so in the comment section of that week’s post. Your comment should look something like this: “Hi, fanofhistory beat bava this week, 2-1.” Report by the end of Thursday each week.

4. Communicate early and often. I will only send out the one email with all your contact information. Don’t lose it! Get in touch by email (it is much more effective than waiting around on MTGO). If no one communicates with each other or with me, that week’s pairing will be considered a draw. After two consecutive draw weeks due to lack of communication, you will be removed from the League. If one person is attempting to communicate and the other person is not, they should let me know. I will attempt to solve issues when I can, but when that doesn’t work out, the person who is trying to communicate will always get the win. Don’t wait until the last minute.

5. After the initial email all official league announcements will happen here on the site. I will update every Friday. You can always stay up to date with the link on the home page or by keeping tabs on the Events page. You can also get updates by liking us on Facebook or following me on Twitter @bava_mtg.

6. We’ll play 4-5 weeks of Swiss and then cut to Top 8. The league will end by April 24th.

7. You can drop at any time. Please let me know if you’d like to drop before the next week’s pairings go up. You will always be welcomed back into subsequent league events.

8. Chat about the league or share lists over in our forums.

9. Contact me if you have any questions.

League Prizes

The winner of the league will receive 10 tickets.

In addition, the best-ranking patron in the league will receive 10 tickets. If that is the same person, they will receive 20 tickets.

The winning patron will have to have been in good standing for at least one month, so go sign up now if you haven’t already!

I will double the prize payouts if we reach Patreon support of $200 by the end of March and maintain it through the end of the event.

Announcing Community League #4: Standard Silverblack

Hi everyone!

Thanks to the amazing support of our patrons, I am happy to announce our fourth community league event. The format will be:

Standard Silverblack

community league 4 banner

In addition to this league, so long as our patrons keep coming through, we are now guaranteeing bi-monthly league events! That’s right, a new league every two months, guaranteed.

Here’s the thing, though.

This may be the last public league event. I’m not sure yet, but the reward does say “patron-exclusive” and I want to reward the people that are helping us live the dream. Running a league takes a lot of time and energy (as many of you know), so we also need to make sure that the investment has some payoff.

The biggest payoff is and always will be building a community around the Magic formats we love.

We’re seeking new partnerships and finding new ways to bring amazing content to an international audience. We love doing that, and we love the community that we have built up so far.

We don’t want to sacrifice that, and we won’t. So I want to ask you all, what seems fair?

Here are some options:

Option 1

Keep the bi-monthly leagues open to all, and find a different way to compensate our patrons.

Option 2

Keep the bi-monthly leagues open to all, but only people who are patrons will be able to win prizes.

Option 3

Make future league events patron-only. $2 per month is not too much to ask for great articles, videos, and player-run events.

What do you think? Pick a choice in the form at the bottom of this page, and weigh in down in the comments.

Sign up for the league

While you’re down there in the comments, sign up for league #4, Standard Silverblack!

To sign up, provide your MTGO username, your real name (or preferred pseudonym), and your time zone.

Registration closes on Thursday, March 12. Pairings will go up on the 13th, and you’ll have a week to get your matches in. We’ll continue to have weekly articles and there will be a place in the forums to discuss the format, matches, and more.

Weigh In

We want to do right by everyone, so share your thoughts.
